Are you smarter than a 10 year old?

I produced this video for AVG highlighting their latest Digital Diaries study that found parents believe they are more knowledgeable about the Internet than their children. But are they?

The Future of Mobile & the Hospitality Industry

Guy_levine_leila_makki_terry_m

I was invited to speak at Hospitality Exchange this week in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The session called, ‘Social Media goes Mobile’ included speakers Guy Levine (pictured above) of Return on Digital and Brian Harte of Tourism Ireland.

I was asked to look at how mobiles will impact hotels and hospitality in general. Here’s my presentation on The Future of Mobile & the Hospitality Industry:

Do you agree that all hotels should have free WiFi? Have you ever downloaded and used a hotel app? Would love to hear your thoughts.

PS – I just realised I’m on the cover of the conference programme along with Celebrity Chef Atul Kocjar & Food Critic Jay Rayner. Sweet!

Vodafone Mobile Clicks 2011

Photo23

Last week, I was honoured to be invited to host the 4th annual Vodafone Mobile Clicks competition in Amsterdam over two days at Picnic 2011.

Mobile Clicks is the world’s largest startup competition and this year there were 7 finalists from the Netherlands, UK, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Turkey and Germany. The prize: a whopping €225,000 (third place receives €25,000, second place takes home €50,000 and first place walks away with €150,000).

Thankfully, I wasn’t one of the judges because all the finalists did an amazing job presenting their pitches. The following day, the winners were revealed in front of hundreds of attendees and presented with fat cheques.

Third place (€25,000) went to Germany’s Wunderlist, a productivity app that supports over-the-air sync and unlimited sharing for free.

Second place (€50,000 prize) went to the UK’s ParcelGenie, an Instant Gift Messaging service that sends real gifts to friends and family via an email or a text message.

And the winner (€150,000) was Spain’s FrogTek, which is an Android app that allows shopkeepers in the developing world to set up a financial system to run their business.

Congrats to all the winners and the finalists! Everyone had so much passion and energy and I wish all the startups loads of success.

Here’s a video of the finalists & competition:

AVG’s Common Sense Guide to Working on the Go!

In this video, I wrote, presented and produced AVG’s common sense guide to keep yourself connected and protected when you are on the go.

Cloud-powered Mobile Applications

In this special report for TelecomTV, I report on the growth of Cloud-based mobile services and applications, and meet three companies who are doing pioneering work in this new sector. Metaswitch, SwiftKey and Simplexo also have to counter the perception of lack of security in using Cloud services. If the right precautions are taken, there is no inherent problem with Cloud-based mobile computing, and services such as these will gain wider appeal and could soon become the norm.

The Mobile Workforce

If you are a mobile worker who uses a smartphone, learn some tips and tricks from AVG’s Rob Gorby to keep yourself secure whilst working on the go.

VoIP Phreaking a growing risk

Moving to VoIP makes the phone system just another data application which means it’s prone to hacks, denial of service attacks and various types of fraud. Users need to be made aware of the risks of phone phreakery.

TelecomTV: Future of Technology

What technologies will we all be using in 2025? I head over to Paris, France to try out some of the candidates: how about NFC car keys, animated bus shelters or holographic theaters?

MultiMi launch night

An exclusive preview into the UK launch of MultiMi, a cool new desktop app that makes sharing and socialising across your email accounts and social networks a breeze.

Easy access to all your contacts: Stay on top of your email, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts in one simple and safe application.

First Look: HTC EVO 3D

Taking a cue from the Nintendo 3DS and the LG Optimus 3D, you won’t need glasses to experience the brand new HTC EVO 3D! But is it all gimmicks and headaches?

Robotic Recycling

Manual sorting of ICT waste is a global problem and one that is extremely hazardous to humans. So much so that it has been banned in the EU, but unfortunately is still common practice elsewhere. ZenRobotics of Finland has developed an AI-powered robotic recycler that the company says can salvage 12,000 tonnes of raw materials per year.

Powerkiss – Wireless Charging

Wire-free (inductive) charging for mobile devices has been around for a while, but one company has taken what it claims is the next obvious step. It’s built the charger technology right into (or under) the surface of the furniture and claims that once the wires and technology is hidden, the geek factor is banished from ‘public charging’.

Opening the mobile wallet in 2011

The mobile wallet is one of THE big agenda items for 2011, but how quickly will it take off? Mobile users already keep their friends, messages, maps and locations on their phones – are they ready to stuff their cash into them as well?

Perhaps in time: the experts warn not to expect any sudden changes. This will be a gradual adoption process as users build familiarity and – above all – trust. The physical and electronic wallets will coexist for some time to come.

Will Windows Phone 7 Mango hit the spot?

It has 500 new features, is highly sociable, fast and shiny and it’s attracting hundreds of apps to Microsoft’s app store on a daily basis, but will Microsoft’s new iteration of its Phone 7 OS really cut it out in the market.

Augmented Royalty?

Holition, which specialises in augmented reality has partnered with the world’s oldest jewellery maker, Garrard, to fashion tiaras in a more modern setting. Without the need for physical markers, the face tracking technology enables passers-by to stand directly in front of an interactive window display and watch a tiara appear on their head. The application uses photo-realistic computer modeling and real time light reflecting technology.

ON Voicefeed

ON Voicefeed is a visual voicemail app with a difference. Developed by a subsidiary of mobile telco Orange, it allows iPhone users to customise their greeting according to who is calling – better yet, Orange is offering it ‘over the top’ to any iPhone user.
