More Mobile Phones than #Moonwalk…

"Throw your hands in the air, and wave them like you just don't care!"

The #Moonwalk Flash Mob that took place today at Liverpool Street Station in London was all hype. Although the impromptu effort was admirable, the lack of organization and people dancing showed this event to  be nothing short of a publicity stunt to get the organizer’s name in the nationals, despite that he works for one.

I turned up to the event at 6:00pm with some colleagues and there were roughly 300 people give or take with their arms raised in the air. But they were not ‘waving it like they don’t care’, instead they were holding up their mobile phones to document the event.

But what was the event….? A generous estimate would be 20 people dancing the moonwalk in tribute to MJ. The rest were too busy looking around, wondering where the dancers were or happily snapping pics to actually be active participants.

That aside, the true significance of the so-called flash mob was that it was organized via Twitter and Facebook. Something that began as a joke then spiraled out of control and spread like wildfire across the web 2.0 generation. Hopefully, it demonstrated to the British Transport Police to never underestimate the power of social media sites to bring together a mob of people to the streets of London last minute.
